Cochlear transduction & sound exposure

Connect hair-cell movement to sensory signaling and understand why an audio demo is not a hearing test.

Learning objectives

Describe a change in signal type

Cochlear motion bends hair-cell stereocilia and changes the sensory cell's electrical activity. Auditory nerve signaling carries information toward the brain. A drawing of a hair cell is therefore a bridge between mechanics and neural signaling, not a miniature microphone with a digital volume number.

Learn without raising the volume

Headphones, device settings and background noise change an online sound demonstration. A browser volume setting is not a calibrated sound-pressure level at the ear. Do not raise the volume to chase a tone you cannot hear. Use diagrams and fictional values to learn the mechanism. Sound exposure depends on level and duration; a simulator cannot measure an individual's hearing threshold or safe exposure.

Practical reasoning station

Teaching case: two classmates hear an online tone differently using different headsets. List possible technical differences before making any claim about their hearing.

Show explanation

Headset output, fit, device processing, volume and room noise may differ. These uncontrolled variables prevent a clinical comparison. No diagnosis can be drawn from the demo; professional testing uses an appropriate controlled setup.

Practice questions

Practice score: 0 / 0

1. Which structure participates in sensory transduction?

Show explanation

Answer: Cochlear hair cells

Hair cells couple mechanical motion to electrical changes in the sensory pathway.

2. Can a browser volume percentage specify the sound level at your ear?

Show explanation

Answer: No; the equipment and setup matter

A volume slider does not calibrate acoustic output at the listener's ear.
